Welcome to Orkipedia

The Lake Zurich Middle School North Orchestra Program is proud to unveil Orkipedia (a wiki the MSN Orchestra program) where students take advantage of technology to further their understanding of music. With such technology students are able to bring the orchestra classroom into their homes. Students will be responsible for creating articles with rich content on musical concepts, music history, instrument performance, and other ideas related to orchestra.

Orkipedia is a great tool for students to share information that they have learned not only with their peers during the current year, but with future orchestra students in the years to come. This also allows for increasingly more in-depth research and sharing of specific topics as students are responsible for adding new findings and ideas to already existing articles.

Not only are students growing in their understanding of music, but by using technology in this way, they are integrating their personal lives with their academic learning. Frequently, students use wikis at home for personal interests (gaming, research, etc.) but will now have the opportunity to contribute to wikis in an academic setting. As students grow more confident contributing to Orkipedia they may begin to participate in other wikis for which they have unique knowledge.

A wishful side effect of students using a wikis in an educational setting is that they will practice proper netiquette, practice using proper grammar, and practice being creative. Students should take these practices to the other wikis in which they participate.
