Mr. Broach
From Orkipedia
Riley Wilson Broach, b 1978
Mr. Broach is the director of the MSN Orchestra Program. He began playing the double bass in 4th grade orchestra at Field Elementary School in Wheeling, IL. In 7th grade, at Holmes Junior High, Mr. Broach joined the jazz band and learned to play the electric bass. He continued to perform in high school orchestra and jazz band both at Wheeling HS and later at Grayslake HS. Additionally, he performed with McHenry County Youth Orchestras, Lake Forest Community Orchestra, and Lake County Youth Orchestras. Outside of school and the community, Mr. Broach performed in various rock bands with his high school friends. There probably exists a recording on a cassette tape or two of these bands lost somewhere in someone's basement - that's probably a good thing that they are lost.
In college, at the University of Illinois, Mr. Broach double majored in Music Education and Music Performance in the Double Bass. He learned to play the violin, viola, and cello as well as a few woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments - poorly. He continued to perform with friends outside of school in various rock, jazz, and folk bands where he learned to play the guitar.
After graduating from the University of Illinois, Mr. Broach became the orchestra director at Lake Zurich Middle School North in 2002. He does not miss holding rehearsals in a small trailer outside of old MSN in the parking lot.
In the summer of 2006, Mr. Broach finished his Masters Degree in Music Education from Northwestern University. It was one of his greatest experiences receiving such a quality education.
Also in 2006, Mr. Broach purchased a historic home in Palatine (the third oldest in town, built in 1866) and continues to restore it to its former glory. Perhaps in many years to come it will be finished.
